Despite reaching its maturity stage, the mobile phone market in China reached CNY 150 billion or 130 million units in 2006 and increased by 15 percent compared to last year, the latest research from Gfk, finds.
Sales of low-end mobile phones represent 50 percent of the market share in China’s mobile phone industry and domestic brands are heavily favored compared to their foreign counterparts.
The future of China's mobile phone market will however be more competitive considering multinational companies are putting in more resources and efforts to dominate this very lucrative market.
In related news, China sidestepped third generation (3G
) telephony and launched a trial run for the world’s first fourth generation (4G) technology in Shanghai's Changning District today.
The 4G technology is expected to speed up wireless data transmission up to 100 mbps, which is comparable to optical fiber. This technology improves data services and high-quality images with the potential to provide multi-channel high definition TV broadcasting.
The projected cost of the 4G trial run is CNY 150 or $19 million. Worldwide commercial availability is expected for 2010.
