By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

Samsung Electronics Co., a global company and a reputed handset maker, reportedly released its first open source-based mobile phone exclusively for a British mobile carrier.

As reported, the new Samsung (News - Alert) touchscreen device based on the LiMo platform will be available for subscribers to a new service called Vodafone 360, which is provided by the mobile telecommunications network company Vodafone (News - Alert) Inc.

"As a founder member of the LiMo Foundation, we have been highly involved in driving the platform forward and are truly delighted that Samsung has delivered the first R2 LiMo handset," said Shin Jong-kyun, executive vice president and head of the mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics, in a statement.

The LiMo platform is an operating system and software development platform for mobile devices, developed by the LiMo Foundation (News - Alert). The foundation is a consortium of mobile industry leaders working together to deliver a free and open software source for use by the whole mobile industry, based on the Linux computer operating system. More than 40 LiMo handset models have been rolled out that provide an array of features designed to enhance consumers’ mobile experience. LiMo R2, or Release 2, refers to the latest version of the original LiMo.

"Vodafone 360 H1 by Samsung represents our commitment to deliver the quality and richness of the LiMo platform to consumers worldwide,” Shin said. “Together with Samsung's proven technology leadership in the mobile phone industry, I strongly believe that Samsung will provide better value to our consumers along with Vodafone's ground breaking service, Vodafone 360."

Reportedly, Samsung's Vodafone 360 H1 is equipped with high performance in a stylish design. It provides end users with a state-of-the-art user experience, a 5 MP camera, a 3.5 inch high-resolution active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display with advanced touch screen interface, WiFi (News - Alert) and USB 2.0 connectivity, and GPS support and a wide range of features including high-definition video recording.
