Aruba Networks Releases White Paper on UMA for Enterprise Use

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Aruba Networks (News - Alert), Inc. providing user-centric networks and secure mobility solutions, announced that a white paper on Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) for Enterprises is available.

The white paper titled Fixed Mobile Convergence (News - Alert) with UMA for Enterprises explains the possibility of using Wi-Fi infrastructure and Internet connectivity at work places for reliable use of cell phones.

The cellular coverage, which is not reliable, always has dissuaded the use of cell phones in many companies. Aruba’s cost-effective wireless network would enhance the cell coverage and also offer voice-over Wi-Fi calling making UMA a business-critical tool said the company in a press release.

Peter Thornycroft (News - Alert), author of the Aruba white paper commented, “Many ‘road warriors’ already have unlimited data plans, but have been stifled because of spotty coverage. This limitation affects both an individual’s productivity and the company’s return on investments in cellular usage plans.”

“Wi-Fi connectivity can effectively fill the coverage gaps and the user additionally gains access to virtually no-cost domestic and international voice-over-Wi-Fi calls. Even when cellular coverage is adequate, Wi-Fi offers significant performance improvements for both voice and data services because it supplements UMA connections with a direct Internet connection,” he further elaborated.

The paper explains how UMA which is originally a technology suited for residential customers can be made suitable for businesses. UMA can become a cost-effective technology for businesses if quality-of-service and security can be enhanced. Aruba ensures toll quality voice throughout the coverage area leveraging its application-aware automated quality-of-service mechanisms.

Besides, the security on corporate wireless LANs is also enhanced by Aruba’s identity-based security system. To increase security Guest access control, firewalling and security access policies are rigidly enforced and managed said Aruba in a statement.

Identification based on the user rather than the port provides network protection even if the network is accessed from anywhere and however.

Keerti Melkote (News - Alert), Aruba’s founder and head of products and partnerships said, “UMA offers a new dimension in our ability to securely and reliably deliver the enterprise network to mobile users. Enterprise fixed-mobile convergence technology automatically manages the hand-off of data and voice calls between Aruba’s wireless LANs, a SIP-based IP PBX (News - Alert), and a cellular network, and has been in field trial for some months.”

“In applications in which there is no IP PBX, such as hot spots, home offices, and satellite offices, UMA fills coverage gaps by linking an Aruba wireless LAN directly with a cellular carrier’s infrastructure. This can help the carrier deliver a better user experience, lower telecommunication costs, and enjoy stronger brand identity,” he continued.

The company announced that this new white paper will be available on Aruba’s website.
