Navini Unveils New Range of 802.16e Modems

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Navini (News - Alert) Networks has unveiled its Mobile WiMAX device portfolio, titled "Surfer" which will include Surfer 1000, 2000 and 3000 initially.

This release has come at a time when the WiMAX industry is inching closer to Mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) certification.

"Most of Navini's customers plan to upgrade their networks to 802.16e over the next 12 months, largely through the use of over-the-air software upgrades," Sai Subramanian, VP of Navini Networks, was quoted as saying.

"With the Surfer 1000, Navini's customers can immediately start converting their networks and experience significant cost and performance benefits. They can then introduce Surfer 2000 and Surfer 3000 devices as Wave 1 and Wave 2 certifications are completed all the while enjoying the benefits of Navini's patented Smart Beamforming technology," Subramanian added.

Using OFDMA (802.16e) technology, the Surfer 1000 will operate on Navini's Mobile WiMAX networks. The product offers customers a cost effective alternative when they transition from their old network to 802.16e, ahead of WiMAX Wave 1 and Wave 2 certification. The Surfer 1000 modems will be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2007 and will support the following spectrum bands -- 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, 2.6GHz, 3.4GHz, and 3.5GHZ.

Navini Networks has been collaborating with original design manufacturers (ODM) for the development of a range of WiMAX Forum certified modems. The Surfer 2000 modems will be Wave 1 certified, while the Surfer 3000 devices will be Wave 2 certified. Additionally, the Surfer 3000 will also support Beamforming and MIMO.

Users can get the Navini Surfer 1000 in a variety of colored "skins". The Navini Surfer 2000 and 3000 Mobile WiMAX device range is scheduled to be shipped in the first half of 2008. The Surfer 2000 and 3000 devices will include:

--A desktop modem that is Ethernet port connectivity enabled. It can be installed to connect directly to a single host computer, or over a routed network with several host computers

--A USB mobile device designed for laptops. It will offer access at broadband speeds from Navini's beamforming enabled WiMAX network

--A voice enabled modem that incorporates a VoIP client and RJ-11 twisted pair connection to a standard telephone set. It also includes a standard Ethernet port for computer or LAN connections.
