Wireless Phones to Aid Domestic Violence Victims

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it recently donated 30 wireless phones and free airtime to New York City's Administration of Children's Services. The agency provides life-saving services to victims of domestic violence and their families in the area.

The agency received the donation through the telecom's HopeLine Phone Recycling Program. The program collects wireless phones that are no longer in use at the Verizon Wireless Communications Stores located throughout the New York Metro area. These phones are then refurbished, recycled or sold and the proceeds are later donated to domestic violence advocacy groups or used to purchase wireless phones for victims.

Administration of Children's Services will lend the phones to women at risk to allow them to call for help in case of emergencies and to make the phone calls necessary to rebuild their lives.

“No offense shakes individual security more than violence in the home,” said Charles Hand, president of Verizon Wireless' New York Metro Region, in a statement. “At Verizon Wireless, we continue to be humbled by the strength of domestic violence survivors as they work to secure their families and rebuild their lives.”

HopeLine phone donations also are accepted at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in New York City and across the U.S. Store locations and additional information about this program is available online.

Today's news follows Verizon's announcement earlier this month about it ceasing the collection of the 3 percent federal excise tax on monthly consumer telephone bills for long-distance and other telecom bundled services.

The move will allow customers to obtain a refund or credit from the IRS when they file their 2006 federal income tax returns. (Applicable to the portion of the excise tax to those services paid over the past three years).

The telecom made this announcement following a recent decision by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) back in May. The IRS decided to allow telecoms to discontinue the collection of tax on long-distance, as well as wireless, VoIP, prepaid telephone cards and other bundled services. The change took effect August 1st.
