Cell Phone Users: Ready to Turn Off Landline for Your Cell?

By Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

Dropped calls, poor signals and "dead zones" have typically made cell phones a more attractive and functional device for outdoor use. But in the increasingly mobile world that demands staying connected at all times, consumers are seeking cell phones that are more dependable and that they can use anywhere-- in office, outdoors, or in home.

As an answer to this, cell boosters provide improved signals that strengthen while indoors or in areas where a signal would have otherwise been lost or weakened.

One company, Wi-Ex created zBoost, to meet this need for consumers and SOHO's, who like enterprise businesses users must also remain connected.

In a recent survey conducted along with Harris Interactive (News - Alert), they uncovered that not only are  a large part of consumers really demanding better cell phone signals so they can remain connected regardless of there location, but they are also considering getting rid of their landlines, if strong cell service is possible in their homes.

This is a significant finding as it pushes along the move away from fixed landlines and furthers the mobile climate.

What is interesting also from the study's findings is that 69 percent of survey respondents also claimed the only reason they still have a landline phone, is because they’ve "always had one." Also, more than half (57 percent) of cell phone users said they wouldn’t be opposed to extending their service contract by one year "in order to receive a cell phone signal enhancer or repeater at minimal or no charge."

In a statement to the press, Lloyd R. Meese, President and CEO of Wi-Ex said, "The industry has been watching and waiting for consumers to go completely mobile. Our recent survey reiterates that consumers are demanding better cell phone reception at home; in the office and on the go and that in-door reception is a factor in their decision to dump their landlines.

Last week Wi-Ex and zBoost unveiled results from another survey that found cell phone users were going to extremes just to keep a cell signal in their homes. See: Survey Reveals Poor Indoor Cell Phone Reception Has Consumers Going to the Extreme
