ZeroG Wireless Eyes Embedded WiFi Interoperability with WPAN

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

ZeroG Wireless reportedly will demonstrate interoperability between ZeroG’s ZG2100M “WiFi (News - Alert) I/O” and a new wireless personal area networking, or “WPAN” technology.

The technology for WPANs is still in its infancy and is evolving with the market trends. A WPAN (wireless personal area network) interconnects devices centered on an individual person’s workspace. It uses a technology that permits communication within about 10 meters. A WPAN can also to interconnect all the ordinary computing and communicating devices that many people have on their desk or carry with them.

In an Embedded Systems Conference coming up next week, ZeroG Wireless will demonstrate its wireless PAN technology along with Intel’s My WiFi technology. This technology a laptop to serve as an access point for WiFi-certified consumer electronic devices such as photo frames, cameras and printers. ZeroG also plans to host a seminar named “Adding WiFi/Internet Connectivity to Anything.”

“Consumers are looking for easier ways to wirelessly connect things,” said Tim Colleran, vice president of marketing at ZeroG Wireless. “WiFi Pan technology is exciting because it will simplify connectivity and dramatically increase the availability of wireless access.”

One of the designs developed by ZeroG, a WiFi-enabled thermostat, allows home users and utility company technicians to the thermostat via a WiFi connection. This allows the customers to configure, control, and retrieve real-time data. According to ZeroG, the thermostat supports a variety of green initiatives such as demand-response and time-of-use charging.

The company will demonstrate a WiFi managed power strip, a WiFi configured sprinkler, and a WiFi controlled mobile Web-cam from Wowwee.

In February this year, the company announced availability of the ZG2100M “WiFi I/O,” an easy-to-implement, low-power, low-system cost WiFi solution. Providing WiFi connectivity for nearly any electronic device, the industry’s first WiFi I/O consists of ZeroG’s ZG2100 single-chip WiFi, pre-certified modules, and the Easy-Fi software suite, enabling a new era in connectivity. ZeroG technology has been developed specifically for integrating into the many microcontroller-based systems that have limited processing power, few memory resources, and minimal or no operating systems.
