Korean Highway Corp. Selects Strix Wireless System

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The state-run Korean Highway Corp. (KHC) today reportedly selected Strix Access/One Outdoor Wireless System (OWS) for its intelligent highway infrastructure test bed.

The multi-phase, multi-year nationwide highway project between the cities of Seoul and Pusan aims to determine a cost effective method for Korea’s intelligent, interactive, digital highway infrastructure to deliver multimedia applications to a wide range of end-user, vehicular and other Wi-Fi enabled devices, according to the company.

Strix Access/One Outdoor Wireless System will enable the delivery of video surveillance and voice streamed to and from public safety and commuter vehicles. The solution will also provide the architecture for a simplified communications infrastructure for traffic control and related systems.

According to Strix Systems (News - Alert), the test bed is located on the Kyungbu highway at a 19-mile stretch between Pangyo and Osan. Korean Highway Corp.’s key criteria for the tests included the solution’s ability to achieve continuous fluid 8 megabits-per-second end-to-end connections for streaming video, VoIP and multimedia applications at speeds reaching 62 mph.

For the test, Strix OWS wireless mesh nodes were installed every 1 km with an average 3 or 4 hops from wired backhaul and mobile mesh nodes were installed in vehicles, company officials say. Strix Access/One wireless mesh network equipment delivered the highest performance of any competitor, according to the company. Strix’s system demonstrated the highest throughput, lowest latency and continuous robust performance, company officials say.

Kim Hongchol, a manager at the Korean Highway Corp., said the company had never seen such a large area deployment of wireless mesh network with WLAN technology. He said that the main application of this project is to monitor real, local highway road status and to transfer it to drivers in real time through these mesh network.

The benchmark tests were performed by WLAN highway project of Korean Highway Corp and hosted by TTA (News - Alert), Korean public standard organization. Broadwave Inc., a Strix Systems distributor in Korea, worked closely with its partners POSDATA and Hyundai HDS to submit Strix Systems Access/One OWS for the evaluation, according to the companies.

Henry Jung, a marketing director at Broadwave, said that Wi-Fi mesh overcomes the bandwidth and application limitations of legacy wireless technologies. Jung said that he’s already seen that the system outperforms competitors.

Martin Levetin, a senior vice president at Strix Systems, said the deployment of Strix Access/One for the Korean intelligent transportation infrastructure is a significant statement to Strix’s robust architecture that allows them to demonstrate their superior performance and mobility technology.
