Report: Wireless Roaming Demand Driving Telecommunication Transactions

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

A new telecommunications market report by The Insight Research Corporation revealed that transactional service providers should expect to see a rise in demand for products that support international global roaming.

The types of services considered to be transactional include signaling transaction services, call processing services such as 800, calling card, and directory assistance, as well as support for financial settlements. Transactional services work to bolster all telecommunication services.

The report, entitled, "Transaction Service Processing and Telecommunications, 2009 - 2014", analyzes the technology and the driving forces spurring the growth of transaction services in both wireline and wireless networks.

The continuous strong demand worldwide for wireless services as well as subscribers utilizing more minutes while roaming will serve as significant drivers for transaction services.

In addition, Insight Research forecasts that another growing area will be worldwide roaming retail for transaction services, which include SMS, MMS and application-to-person. The company expects this area of the market to reach $968 million this year, and to continue growing at double-digit rates over the next five years.

Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research president, said,"The outlook for transaction based services has never been brighter. SMS and MMS, which are predicated upon transactional information, are already well established and we are forecasting that demand will only increase."

"Furthermore, as a greater proportion of subscribers adopt 3G and 4G mobile technology, higher bandwidth applications such as video-on-demand, visual social networking, and Web 2.0 services are likely to demand ever greater support from the transaction service providers, propelling this industry into explosive growth," Rosenberg added.

In today’s ever-increasing mobile world, and with the rise in affordable PDA device offerings, people rely more on their mobile phones and never leave home – much less board a plane- without them.

It comes as no surprise that services that are driven by anything mobile-related are experiencing an increase in demand. But in today’s economy, it’s hard not to wonder how long the telecommunication transaction services’ market momentum will last.
