Alcatel-Lucent Signs Contract with 10 Korean Universities for Secure Multimedia Services

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been selected by 10 Korean Universities to offer secure wireless and 10 Gigabit Ethernet services, according to a Webwire news report. Increasing student and faculty demand for multimedia services has contributed to the recent network expansion.

The Alcatel-Lucent OmniAccess wireless LAN switch 6000 is a central management system designed to manage up to 512 access points. It comes with exceptional security and authentication functions.

The OmniSwitch 9800 is an ingenious multi-layered switching platform that incorporates the industry’s highest capacity equivalent and carrier-class availability. It is designed with a Smart Continuous Switching architecture that offers redundant power supplies, switch fabric, management processors, paths in the network, and server load balancing techniques for the entire process of switch configuration duplication and restoration.

“With our Wi-Fi network, our end-users can now access the Internet from all over the campus, which has dramatically increased use of our network,” Ki-hyun Cho, manager of education support and management team, Center for Information Technology of Soongsil University, was quoted as saying in the report. “Nevertheless, management of the Alcatel-Lucent network has remained very efficient.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess wireless LAN switch (OAW-6000) and access points will be offered to Taegu Science College, Hyupsung College, Catholic College of Busan, Hansung University, Soongsil University and Ansan College of Technology. The new networks are incorporated with the maximum possible level of user security and authentication. This will allow the faculty and staff to gain wireless access to the Internet and the college’s online administrative and grading resources from anywhere inside the campus, with little threat to sensitive data.

In addition to these colleges, Hongik University, Soongsil University, the Ansan campus of Hanyang University, Duksung Womens University and Kyungmin College and a few others have chosen the Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 9000 switch products for 10-Gigabit Ethernet backbone networks. All the universities have sought an increase in bandwidth and enhancement of network security. For this purpose, they will look to make use of the advanced features of the OS9000 switches, which include user authorization.

“Students and faculty alike are demanding more diverse applications, which drives up network use and increases our investment in secure high-capacity networks,” Jin-hak Kim, General manager of Institute of Information and Computer, Hongik University, was quoted as saying in the report. “We aspire to be at the forefront of services delivery, improving not only the service quality, but also adopting customized network solutions to meet our users’ needs.”

“As colleges actively seek a ubiquitous campus network environment, their need to build networks to support converged services becomes more critical,” Kwang-jik Kim, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s Enterprise activities in Korea, was quoted as saying in the report. “Alcatel-Lucent continues to concentrate on providing customized solutions to address the unique communications needs of end-users, while addressing key issues like accessibility, reliability and security.”
