Ascom FreeNET Voice over WiFi Solution Certified by Trapeze Networks

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Ascom FreeNET VoWiFi portfolio has been certified for interoperability with Trapeze Smart Mobile wireless LAN infrastructure.

A combination of Ascom’s FreeNET VoWiFi solution and their portfolio of mission-critical communication applications with Trapeze Smart Mobile can dramatically improve the productivity of a large body of highly mobile workers in Healthcare, Retail, Education, Manufacturing, Warehousing and other industries.

The integrated solution delivers reliable enterprise-wide voice services with unified messaging, which results in total mobility. The solution has the ability to respond immediately and solve problems quickly, without wasting resources.

Ascom explains that the Ascom FreeNET standards-based solution consists of market-specific VoWiFi portable handsets with direct SIP connection or optional VoIP Gateway for integration to an existing circuit-switched PBX. FreeNET can support IEEE (News - Alert) standards, including 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11e (Quality of Service), and 802.11i (Security). The robust Ascom i75 handset offers several unique advantages, and is fully compliant with the very latest IEEE 802.11 and Wi-Fi alliance standards.

Trapeze Smart Mobile technology provides the lowest latency and most efficient traffic flows for voice over WiFi. The technology overcomes all the limitations of current-generation WLANs by allowing voice traffic to be locally switched at the Access Point (News - Alert), instead of requiring a latency-inducing round-trip through a centralized WLAN controller.

Trapeze’s Smart Mobile combines both centralized and distributed data forwarding based on the requirements of the underlying application, which results in higher performance and increased application scalability. All this can be achieved without the high cost of upgrading WLAN controllers.

“Trapeze Networks (News - Alert) has been recognized as a leader in WiFi by firms such as Forrester, Yankee Group and ABI,” says Tom McKearney, VP of Marketing and Business Development, Ascom in a statement.

He continued: “Customers can now be confident that the Ascom FreeNET VoWiFi solution has been fully tested and works seamlessly with Trapeze Smart Wireless LAN infrastructure. Interoperability with Trapeze will allow Ascom to expand its FreeNET portfolio into new vertical markets through the extensive Trapeze distributor and reseller network.”

Dan Simone, CTO, Trapeze Networks believes that Ascom’s VoWiFi solution is a complementary addition to their existing wireless infrastructure offering.

Simone said that they are seeing tremendous demand from their customers for reliable voice services over WiFi (News - Alert) networks, especially in Healthcare, Manufacturing and Retail where so much of the workforce is 100% mobile. He explained that their combined solution provides the comfort of assured interoperability and ruggedized VoWiFi handsets with long battery life.

“The combination of Trapeze Smart Mobile with Ascom i75 handsets delivers toll-quality voice, seamless roaming with no dropped calls and extended utility.Achieving interoperability was an easy process since both Ascom and Trapeze are global companies deeply committed to industry standards including Security, QoS and WMM PowerSave,” he added.

Trapeze Networks delivers Smart Mobile, a ground-breaking approach to wireless networking, enabling organizations to deploy massively scalable mobile applications that leverage their existing infrastructure.

Ascom Wireless Solutions is a provider of on-site wireless communications for key segments such as hospitals, manufacturing, retail and hotels.
