Broadcom Solutions Now Bluetooth 2.1 Compliant

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Bluetooth silicon and software from Broadcom (News - Alert) Corp. reportedly become the first solutions to be qualified for the new Bluetooth Version 2.1 specification, as specified by the Bluetooth Qualification Board (BQB).

The Broadcom BCM2046 Bluetooth transceiver abridges the set-up of mobile phones and other Bluetooth products and enhances the overall user experience with longer battery life and stronger security. The BCM2046 becomes the Bluetooth Version 2.1 solution that supports enhanced data rate (EDR) technology and offers a high-performance Class 1 radio.

"The Bluetooth 2.1 specification is an important milestone that will invigorate the Bluetooth market with revolutionary wireless applications," said Scott Bibaud, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Bluetooth line of business. "Designed with the future in mind, our latest solution combines Bluetooth 2.1 features with other advanced features to enable a new generation of devices with enhanced Bluetooth capabilities."

The BCM2046, Broadcom's latest single-chip Bluetooth transceiver, is equipped with EDR technology and superior receive sensitivity to provide wireless multimedia capabilities for mobile phones, notebook and desktop computers, PDAs and peripheral devices. Broadcom’s solutions offer advanced features such as extended inquiry response (EIR) to speed up the discovery process, encryption pause/resume (EPR) to fix security holes, sniff subrating to enable significantly longer battery-life and secure simple pairing to provide maximum protection against eavesdropping.

As far as software is concerned, Broadcom has combined with BCM2046 silicon, Broadcom's BTW (Bluetooth for Windows), Bluetooth Embedded (BTE)-Mobile and BTW-CE software to provide OEMs with a flexible and comprehensive technology platform to facilitate Bluetooth applications.
