Data Technology Launches VSAT Broadband Service for Maritime Companies

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Data Technology Solutions, a global satellite service provider based in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, has reportedly launched a low-cost, integrated satellite broadband offering for the maritime market.

According to company officials, the DTS Global Connect (News - Alert) Solution is built on iDirect's next generation Evolution DVB-S2 platform and works with a 24-inch (60cm) Ku-band antenna. The service is offered at a wide range of flat-fee subscription plans with nearly global coverage.

Company officials said that DTS (News - Alert) Global Connect is designed to meet the needs of private and commercial vessel operators for affordable, easy-to-install broadband voice and data communications.

The service brings several new features to the growing VSAT broadband market including flexible flat-fee monthly rates beginning at $800 for 512 kbps without the requirement to sign a 12-month contract. Customers can even purchase the service based on a one-day rate.

Moreover, bandwidth can be shared among multiple vessels in a fleet to economically support bandwidth intensive applications.

"DTS' decision to select iDirect (News - Alert) for its latest hub stems from a long lasting relationship that DTS employees have had with iDirect technology and support personnel," Mike Guidroz, president of DTS, said in a statement.

Guidroz said that another reason for choosing iDirect was the ability to do multiple beams within one single chassis, and having the ability to switch beams between networks. Also DVB-S2 with adaptive coding outbound and the latest MODCODs plays a big part in making this network successful, he added.

"The new DTS Global Connect service combines VSAT performance with an economical service plan," Rob Kilroy, vice president, Americas, iDirect said.

Kilroy said that this is an important advance in the VSAT service market, meeting the needs of a wide range of customers that are ready to bring high-speed networks onboard, but require more flexible investment and installation options.
