Korean mobile WiMAX provider Posdata has joined forces with True Corp to test the wireless WiMAX ( News - Alert) broadband access in Thailand, according to an announcement today. Posdata demonstrated its latest solution for attendees of the WiMAX World Asia 2008 conference attendees over the past two days.
“The Thai market is important to us,” said Posdata EVP Joonil Shin. “And we see from our experience in Korea that the deployment of mobile WiMAX in Thailand will lead to many opportunities for developing the Thai economy in general, and the ICT industry in particular”
Among the capabilities of mobile WiMAX which were demonstrated were high-speed internet access and multimedia services. To accomplish this, a luxury bus was provided to take attendees around the vicinity of Bangkok to experience the service live. Video telephony, real-time video and audio streaming and web searches were all demonstrated.
True Corp’s deputy director for wireless broadband services, Non Ingkutanon, said the company has received approval from the National Telecommunications Commission earlier this year to test WiMAX for a period of three months, which they will do at the Ratchaprasong intersection near CentralWorld Plaza. Additional testing equipment will be installed in a housing estate in the Rangsit area, and later in northern and eastern Thailand.
“True is quite confident,” said Mr. Non, “that we will receive approval for a full WiMAX license by the end of the year or early 2009 at the latest, based on commitments issued by the NTC.”
True was prepared to invest in WiMAX and third-generation mobile technologies once it got the go-ahead from the NTC.
