Qualcomm ( News - Alert) has granted TechFaith Wireless Technology Group a royalty-bearing, worldwide license under Qualcomm's patent portfolio to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber units and modem cards implementing the WCDMA and TD-SCDMA standards.
Under the agreement, Qualcomm has licensed TechFaith for 3G subscriber units and modem cards that implement the CDMA2000, WCDMA/UMTS and/or TD-SCDMA standards. According to Qualcomm, the royalties payable by TechFaith are at Qualcomm’s standard worldwide rates and are the same irrespective of the CDMA standard implemented by the subscriber unit or modem card.
Marvin Blecker, president of Qualcomm Technology Licensing said that they are experiencing increased momentum in the worldwide transition from 2G to 3G mobile services. He added that the expansion of TechFaith's licenses from Qualcomm to including these additional 3G CDMA technologies will ensure that they remain highly competitive in the global market by offering advanced wireless handsets and modem cards to customers worldwide.
“By expanding its licenses from Qualcomm, TechFaith, a leading developer of 3G technology, is poised to strengthen its worldwide position by offering an increasingly diverse set of new handsets, modem cards and applications,” said Philip He, CTO of TechFaith in a statement.
He said that as a handset ODM, TechFaith can now develop, manufacture and sell products covering the 3G spectrum, including CDMA2000, WCDMA/UMTS and TD-SCDMA.
TechFaith believes the close cooperation with Qualcomm will enable them to offer their customers fully integrated 3G solutions that will serve the worldwide market and will support a seamless transition by GSM and GPRS operators to 3G -- making the most of existing network investments, reducing startup costs and providing rewarding new experiences and applications for consumers.
