Micrel Intros Hyper Speed Control PWM Controllers

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Micrel Inc. – a company that specializes in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions – reportedly introduced Hyper Speed Control PWM controllers, the MIC2164, MIC2164-2 and MIC2164-3.

The Hyper Speed Control architecture of these ICs reduces required output capacitance and allows optimum transient response at the same time making high delta V operation possible. These solutions are most suitable for set-top boxes, gateways, routers, computing peripherals, and telecom/networking equipments.

“Micrel’s (News - Alert) unique Hyper Speed Control architecture offers terrific benefits such as reduced BOM cost and world class transient response for cost-sensitive applications such as set-top-box, graphic cards and servers,” said John T. Lee, director of power products at Micrel.

“The huge advantage gained by our digitally modified hyper speed architecture is high speed, resulting in a smaller footprint and lower system-level cost for our customers,” added Lee.

Micrel’s new devices are constant on-time mode PWM controllers which exhibit wide input voltage range, high performance and can drive up to 25 A of load current. The MIC2164 operates at 300 KHz PWM frequency and the MIC2164-2 and MIC2164-3 ICs operate at 600 KHz and 1 MHz respectively allowing a size reduction path. The family of the three ICs achieves more than 95 percent efficiency while still switching at high frequencies over a broad load range.

The PWM controllers operate over a wide input supply range of 3V to 28V offering cycle-to-cycle current limiting for FET protection. The UVLO circuitry optimizes proper operation even under power-lag conditions preventing the MOSFETs from overheating as the Soft Start feature reduces inrush current, said the company.

The Integrated circuits also feature built-in compensation with an external ripple injection circuit. The MIC2164 Hyper Speed Control family of PWM controllers comes in a 10-pin MSOP package with a junction operating range from -40 deg C to +125 deg C.

Micrel Inc. manufactures IC solutions for analog, Ethernet and high bandwidth markets. The company offers products like advanced mixed-signal, analog and power semiconductors; high performance communication, clock management, Ethernet switch and physical layer transceiver ICs.

The company said that its products are used by manufacturers of enterprise, consumer, industrial, mobile, telecommunications, automotive, and computer products.
