Sprint Nextel and Clearwire ( News - Alert) have agreed to terminate the Letter of Intent signed July of 2007, according to an announcement today. This is due to both companies being unable to resolve issues associated with the letter, and failing to agreem on the terms of the transaction.
"We are on track for soft launch late this year in the Chicago and Baltimore/Washington markets and commercial launch in 2008," said Sprint ( News - Alert) president of Strategic Planning and Corporate Initiatives Keith Cowan. "In line with Sprint's mandate of improving the customers experience and simplifying our operations, we look forward to working with Clearwire on opportunities such as roaming and standards."
Sprint is still in favor of developing WiMAX services and deploying a network that will permit users to enjoy the benefits of a mobile broadband Internet. Sprint will work together with Clearwire in the future on improving the deployment of robust WiMAX capabilities. Their ongoing discussions will center on roaming, frequency interference coordination, technology evolution, spectrum exchanges, and development and network standards.
Sprint is currently reviewing its WiMAX ( News - Alert) business plans. The company will comment further in early 2008.
