Alert), the Wi-Fi
community called upon all the residents of San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood to join the FON community. This would enable comprehensive Wi-Fi access to Castro said FON in a press release.
Residents and business owners are eligible for a free La Fonera wireless router and free installation when they join the FON community. Residents who sign up can request their router at SharetheCastro.com said FON.
FON is striving to make Castro a free Wi-Fi zone and all it needs individuals to do, is to share a small portion of their Internet connection. All the participants are eligible to access all hotspots created by the community.
Expressing his enthusiasm, San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty said, “The people of San Francisco want the best WiFi
access possible. I’m thrilled to support FON’s efforts to help solidify San Francisco’s reputation as the most wired city in the country.”
The concept of ‘Share the Castro’ is to offer Wi-Fi connectivity with all the residents and business owners. The sharing of Internet connections enables FON to convert these wireless access points to a shared Wi-Fi hotspot
which would be beneficial to all said FON in a statement.
To actually put plans into action, Chad Michaels of Cher fame distributed free routers to residents of Castro who have opted to make Castro a Wi-Fi zone.
Joanna Rees, U.S. CEO of FON remarked, “The residents of San Francisco, and the Castro in particular, are known for being a close-knit community at the forefront of technology innovation. With this in mind, it’s very exciting to kick off ‘Share the Castro’ today, and to have some fun while providing something of real value to Castro residents.”
The La Fonera Wi-Fi router supplied by FON works with two wireless signals. One signal is for personal use at home not accessible to anybody else and the other is for public use to be used by FON community members with which members can connect to the Internet.
The router La Fonera is compatible with different operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux besides it being easy to install. It enables users to connect all Wi-Fi devices to the broadband Internet connection.
FON investors include Google (
