China Telecom's 3G Wireless Services in Tianjin Now Available for Commercial Use

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Tianjin Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, has announced the formal roll-out of 3G wireless services for commercial use in the Binhai New Area in north China's north port city of Tianjin.

The deployment of 3G in Tianjin will enable China Telecom’s (News - Alert) users to have access to three types of network services, namely a CDMA2000 network, WLAN hot spot, and CDMA 1X.
3G is the third generation of telecommunication hardware standards and the general technology for mobile networking. These 3G networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that facilitate high-speed Internet access and video telephony.
Based on the code-division multiple access (CDMA) technology, the cdma2000 3G wireless system facilitates high-bandwidth data and voice services to users of mobile equipment. The cdma2000 infrastructure node houses a host processor, adjacent node interfaces, and switch fabric - on an Internet protocol router. The adjacent node interface and the switch can be implemented in programmable logic and this combination forms the voice and data path. An Internet protocol router transports packet voice and data within the cdma2000 wireless network.
The CDMA2000 1x is also a standard that facilitates high data rate capabilities to wireless communication products and supports both voice and 153 Kbps of data using the same bandwidth configuration as legacy IS-95A1 CDMA networks.
WLAN Hot spots are public wireless Internet access points that are installed in public places such as hotels, restaurants, airports, railway stations, etc. With this, a mobile device user can have access to Internet but in return for payment.
In addition to this latest announcement, the company also said it plans to move into southern China's Guangdong province and is planning to roll out 3G services by the end of this month with abundant and sufficient mobile phone varieties, as well as a preferential charging policy.
China Telecom also said that it plans to launch its 3G business as early as possible in a bid to better compete with its domestic rivals such as China Unicom (News - Alert) and China Mobile.
