Ralink Launches 802.11n 1T2R Half-Sized Minicard Solution for PCs

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Ralink Technology Corp., a premier provider of wireless LAN chipset solutions, has announced the availability of its RT2700 802.11n 1T2R (one transmit, two receive) chipset. Designed for notebook and desktop PCs, the chipset comes in a half-sized PCIe minicard.

The chipset offers the high throughput and coverage of 802.11n at a price point approaching current 802.11b/g solutions. Solutions powered by RT2700 can be certified for the WiFi Alliance’s 802.11n draft 2.0 standard. These solutions are also capable of offering the latest WiFi (News - Alert) capabilities like 802.11i security, including WiFi Protected Setup and 802.11e quality of service (QoS), which can prioritize voice and video over data transfers.

The RT2700 uses a 1T2R architecture supporting up to 300 Mbps downstream and 150 Mbps upstream PHY rates. The transmit circuitry largely accounts for the power for 802.11n designs. Having one transmitter less, the RT2700 1T2R architecture ensures cost effectiveness and power efficiency.

“The RT2700 chip shows Ralink’s commitment to deliver cost-effective, robust solutions that drive mainstream WiFi adoption,” said Rick Jeng, Executive Vice President of Ralink Technology. “While Ralink is enjoying tremendous growth of our high performance draft 802.11n-based MIMObility solutions by leading Notebook and desktop PC manufacturers, we recognize an additional demand for WiFi connectivity beyond 802.11b/g across the growing value Notebook and PC segments.”

RT2700 is also compliant with the existing industry wireless standards including 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. The chipset comes with an 802.11n evaluation board, reference design and driver software for the Windows Vista operating system.
