Report: 802.11n WiFi Technology to Dominate Wireless HD Video

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

In the coming years, 802.11n WiFi (News - Alert) technology will dominate the wireless HD video market; according to research firm In-Stat.

Although other technologies are competing for the top spot in the wireless HD video domain, increasingly prevalent WiFi technology will emerge as the winner, the firm says.

In-Stat (News - Alert) says technologies such as Home Digital Interface, WirelessHD, and Ultrawideband are also making headway in the wireless HD video sector. But many of those technologies are already facing problems. In-stat says that many chip companies, for example, are leaving the UWB market in late 2008 and 2009 and that the technology will not be a force to reckon with going forward.

“802.11n is the next generation of the immensely popular WiFi family. It promises data rates above 100Mbps and is backwards compatible,” said Brian O’Rourke, an In-Stat analyst. “The installed base of WiFi is immense, and effectively includes all mobile PCs, many mobile phones and a wide variety of CE devices. The primary drawback to 802.11n is expense, since it requires codec technology on both ends to transmit HD video.”

In-Stat predicts that by 2013, about 24 million digital TVs will ship with some type of Wireless HD video technology. The firm says that WHDI and WirelessHD will get off the ground but not much higher, with fewer than 8 million devices with those technologies shipped in 2013.

The research, titled “Wireless HD Video Technologies 2009: WHDI, WirelessHD, 802.11n, and UWB All Test the Waters,” will be published shortly.

In a recently released report, In-Stat said that the next big thing in mobile technology lies in mobile consumer electronics and mobile computing applications. The research, “GPS – ‘Locating’ Its Way into Mobile Devices,” focuses on the worldwide market for GPS chipsets and end products. It also focuses on the Total Available Market and GPS attach rate forecasts for mobile CE and mobile computing through 2013.
