Verizon Completes Enhancements to its Network in Temple University Hospital

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Verizon Wireless and Temple University Hospital announced the completion of an in-building solution which is expected to enhance the coverage and capacity for voice calls and access to Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless’ high-speed 3G network. This will benefit the hospital community including doctors, faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors.

The in-building solution will enhance wireless voice and high-speed data coverage for Verizon customers on all floors of the campus buildings between Tioga and Ontario streets and Germantown Avenue and Broad Street. The coverage will include Temple University Hospital’s Outpatient Building, Park Avenue Building, the Emergency Room and Trauma Center, Parkinson Pavilion, Rock Pavilion and Boyer Pavilion.

Connectivity for wireless calling, Web-browsing, e-mail, text and picture messaging in the facilities and offices will also be improved including in the basement levels of these buildings - which previously was not possible as the wireless signals could not penetrate the concrete walls.

“These enhancements have had an immediate impact to the hospital and will allow us to expand our wireless communications capabilities. Having access to a reliable network and the advanced technology it supports will ultimately help us enhance the care and services that we provide to our patients,” said Frank R. Erdlen, Chief Information Officer, Temple University Physicians and Vice Dean for Information Technology, Temple University School of Medicine.

Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State Region explained that the latest enhancements to the network will keep the University hospital’s doctors connected seamlessly across the campus besides improving wireless communications capabilities for patients and visitors.

Verizon Wireless is the exclusive wireless service provider to Temple University since 2005. The company made enhancements to its wireless network on Temple’s campus by activating a cell site in 2007 that improved coverage throughout the Main Campus.

Also in 2006, the company installed an in-building solution for improving the coverage at the Liacouras Center. This was instrumental in enhancing communications for the university’s athletics staff and student athletes, said university sources.

Temple University is a 636-bed teaching hospital which provides several inpatient and outpatient services to the surrounding community. The university hospital specializes in cardiology, pulmonary, sports medicine and gastroenterology and is the chief clinical training site for the Temple University School of Medicine.
