Fujitsu Smartphones to See Power from TI Applications Processor

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Texas Instruments (News - Alert) Incorporated today announced that its OMAP2430 applications processor has been chosen to deliver advanced multimedia capabilities to Fujitsu’s new F1100 smartphone.

The F1100 smartphone uses TI’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity technology. It is the first Microsoft Windows Mobile phone available with NTT DoCoMo’s (News - Alert) FOMA technology, according to the company.

Shigeru Kihara, general manager of the Advanced Mobile Phones Division t Fujitsu, said that the FOMA F1100 handset is ideal for the needs of enterprise users who need a combination of compelling features and multiple connectivity options. Fujitsu officials say they believe TI’s OMAP technology and connectivity solutions are the most optimal to deliver unparalleled multimedia and connectivity experiences.

Raj Talluri, worldwide general manager for TI’s Cellular Media Systems Solutions group, said that his company is “excited” to see Fujitsu leverage the capabilities of TI’s OMAP technology and connectivity solutions to deliver an enhanced smartphone user experience. TI is pleased to expand their relationship with Fujitsu and help them continue to deliver leading-edge phones that meet the needs of data-hungry consumers, Talluri said.

By using the OMAP2430 processor, Fujitsu’s 3G F1100 handsets deliver audio, video and imaging capabilities, including a QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera capabilities and a microSD card slot, according to the company. The device also uses TI’s BlueLink Bluetooth and WiLink Wi-Fi (a/b/g) solutions for connectivity capabilities. TI informs that the F1100 also uses power management and analog technology from TI, company officials say.

A global semiconductor company, TI officials say their company innovates through manufacturing, design and sales operations in more than 25 countries. The company made news yesterday for acquiring Florida-based Innovative Design Solutions for its expertise in developing analog chips and integrated solutions.

According to TI, the acquisition of IDS reinforces the company’s analog focus and
strengthens its ability to meet customer requirements for high-performance analog products.

Art George, senior vice president for TI’s High Performance Analog business unit, observed that integrating the technical expertise of the IDS team with TI’s talented analog engineers enhances their ability to deliver the right analog products for their customers’ applications.
