Wavion Debuts Beamforming-Based WBS-700 Product Line for the 700 MHz Licensed Band

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Wavion, a provider of Space-Division Multiple Access “SDMA” and digital beamforming technology based solutions, announced the addition of new WBS-700 product line to its family of Wi-Fi solutions. The WBS-700 product line encompasses a family of base stations and compatible CPEs for the entire 700 MHz band.

Recently, the 700 MHz licensed band was opened for wireless broadband access in the US and in other parts of the world.

According to company officials, the WBS-700 is the first beamforming-based solution for the 700 MHz licensed band. In general, beamforming is a signal processing technique used in sensor arrays for directional signal transmission or reception. This technique is used for both radio and sound waves. Adaptive beamforming is also a technique used to detect and estimate the signal-of-interest at the output of a sensor array by leveraging data-adaptive spatial filtering and interference rejection.

Based on the company’s spatially adaptive beamforming technology, the new WBS-700 product line is ideal for extended coverage in rural areas and for better indoor penetration in urban and suburban areas.

The new WBS-700 family leverages six radios and six antennas in order to provide extended range, increased capacity and superior indoor penetration. The WBS-700 base station supports EIRP of 48 dBm (News - Alert) and sensitivity of -108.5 dBm. This base station also enables selectable channels of 5, 10 and 20 MHz.

According to Wavion, the compatible CPEs in the new product line have a dual-zone capability apart from their 700 MHz connectivity to the base station. The solution can provide 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi wireless connectivity to the surrounding area in the home and office.

In addition, the WBS-700 also features a flexible architecture and rugged weather-proof enclosure, thereby providing added value offering to Telecommunication Operators, say officials with Wavion.

Mati Wax, founder and CTO for Wavion, said, “It’s the first time that licensed band Operators can enjoy the Wi-Fi technology economy of scale and the unique performance advantages of Wavion’s Beamforming technology. We plan to extend this product line to cover also the “White Space” band, the TV spectrum recently opened by the FCC for unlicensed operation in the US.”

Wavion is privately held and backed by Tel Aviv-based Investors Elron Electronic Industries (News - Alert) Ltd. and BRM Capital.
