Zing Selects Aperto's PacketMAX Solution for its WiMAX Network

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Zing, a next generation wireless service provider based in Detroit, MI, has selected Aperto Network’s PacketMAX solution for its multi-state WiMAX (News - Alert) network to provide wireless broadband voice and data services in five states including Michigan, Washington, Colorado, Florida, and Tennessee.

Zing's WiMAX network will be initially operating in the lightly-licensed 3.65 GHz frequency and eventually in the license-exempt 5.8 GHz frequency to different customer needs including business, enterprise, SOHO, government, municipal, and education.

"We did our homework on this one and no other wireless product came close to PacketMAX in terms of meeting our unique needs," said Tolly Marcus, President and CEO of Zing.

He added "Our goal is to provide 100% coverage in all markets, and you just can't do this if you rely only on LOS connectivity in licensed frequencies. PacketMAX is known for its robustness in NLOS conditions, carrier-grade quality-of-service (QoS), and rich networking features. It's also the only carrier-grade WiMAX solution on the market with automatic repeat request (ARQ), a must-have to control errors in data transmission."

Zing network will deploy PacketMAX 5000 and PacketMAX 3000 which includes hundreds of subscriber units, including the PacketMAX 120 and PacketMAX 320 series aimed to support symmetrical and asymmetrical connections with speeds up to 10 MB.

Aperto's ensures that WiMAX Forum Certified PacketMAX 5000 meets WiMAX operator service needs and gracefully evolves towards the future. Operators offering fixed WiMAX services can leverage PacketMAX flexibility to inter-operate with other standards-based 802.16 CPEs to generate immediate revenues while maintaining an elegant migration strategy for nomadic, portable, and fully mobile services.

The PacketMAX 5000 base station series operates in licensed and license-exempt bands. It can host both IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16-2004 and IEEE 802.16-2005 subscribers within a single chassis—giving providers a versatile platform from which to launch fixed, nomadic, portable, and fully mobile services.

"This win is another testament to Aperto's WiMAX market leadership in the 3.65 GHz and 5 GHz bands," said Manish Gupta (News - Alert), Vice President of Marketing & Alliances for Aperto Networks and WiMAX Forum Board Member.

He explained, "The deployment will cover diverse geographies, urban and suburban areas, and even include multiple hops over mountains and bodies of water. It really showcases the versatility and performance of our PacketMAX technology when used in non line-of-sight (NLOS) high-interference environments."

Aperto Networks (News - Alert) is based in Milpitas, California serving more than 400 customers in 90 countries.
