Sequans Unveils MAC/PHY Chip for Mobile WiMAX Base Stations

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

SEQUANS (News - Alert) Communications has introduced its newest WiMAX chip, SQN2130, the industry’s first PHY and MAC ASIC optimized for Mobile WiMAX base stations. Based on IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16e-2005 standards, the SQN2130 is WiMAX Forum Wave 2 ready and delivers full 2X2 MIMO with high throughput as a function of Sequans’ patent-pending technology, mimoMAX.

“The availability of the new base station chip together with our mobile station chip gives our customers exceptional benefits,” said Georges Karam, Sequans’ CEO, in a statement.

Karam points out that they provide both ends of the link, assuring interoperability and giving valuable time-to-market and certification advantages as well as provide the highest chip performance at both ends of the link, supporting the manufacture of the industry’s most advanced Mobile WiMAX systems and devices.

Thanks to the SQN2130’s feature rich, low cost, low power design, manufacture of any size base station—femto, pico, micro, or multi-sector macro—in TDD or FDD duplexing mode don’t have to compromise in feature functionality, even at the low end.

The SQN2130 supports hybrid-ARQ Category 4 and can sustain the full line rate even with small packet sizes, translating to throughput of more than 35 Mbps. Additionally, it can support several thousand subscriber stations.

According to Sequans, the SQN2130 has already won several key customers including existing customers migrating from Sequans’ SQN2110 FPGA solution, and new soon-to-be-announced customers that include equipment manufacturers with global deployment plans.

Sequans’ SQN2130 ecosystem partners reportedly include manufacturers of RFIC for femto base stations, OBSAI-compliant RF head for macro base stations, and ASN Gateway (News - Alert) solutions.
