Irvine Police Selects NextPhase Wireless for Public Safety Net

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

NextPhase Wireless (News - Alert) Inc., a next-generation wireless connectivity solutions provider specializing in integrated Internet, voice and data communication, has been chosen by the Irvine Police Department (IPD) in Irvine, California to construct a wireless broadband network operating on the new 4.9 GHz spectrum specifically designated by the FCC (News - Alert) for public safety, emergency management and homeland security applications, according to a MarketWire report.

Irvine Police Chief David L. Maggard Jr., was quoted as saying, "We have worked very hard to extend and enhance our department's legacy of excellence in public safety, and have always looked to innovative technologies to help us work smarter and serve our community more effectively. We are very pleased to be partnering with NextPhase Wireless to deploy this new communication tool. More real-time information and data will allow Irvine officers to respond safer and more effectively to an incident."

"There are very few wireless applications more critical than those related to emergency first response and public safety. Consequently, we are very proud and excited to have been chosen to lead this important phased initiative with the Irvine Police Department, which we expect will serve as an important model for similar 4.9 GHz network deployments by other law enforcement agencies across the country," Robert Ford, chief executive of NextPhase, was quoted as saying in the report.

According to statistics reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Irvine has been recognized as the "Safest City in America", for the third year in a row. The city has consistently ranked low for violent crime and high among great places to live, work or raise a family.

The new wireless 4.9 GHz network to be deployed by NextPhase is funded by a federal grant sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It will be initially employed to provide enhanced security, throughput and reliability for wireless transmission of voice, video and data from IP surveillance cameras, mobile and fixed radio communications systems and the Internet to and from IPD's new Mobile Command and Communications Vehicle.

These high tech vehicles, together with Department's current Mobile Command Center, will serve as critical field operations centers in the event of an emergency or catastrophic event, including major traffic collisions, aircraft crashes, hazardous material spills, major crime scenes, crimes in progress and natural disasters, among others.
