Skype, the popular peer-to-peer Internet telephony network, will now be available on Apple’s iPhone ( News - Alert), according to Skype’s parent company SHAPE Services. Users will be able to access Skype on their iPhone using the iPhone’s built-in Safari application. This specific version of the application has been designed specifically for the iPhone’s unique interface.

“Noticing the public interest for Skype ( News - Alert) on iPhone, we decided to use our mobile IM and mobile Skype experience and develop an application for them; this has also been a move towards our IM+ for Skype platform coverage,” said SHAPE Services CEO Igor Berezovsky. “It is truly easy and convenient to access and use. We are looking forward to hearing some feedback from iPhone users.”
A fully mobile application, IM+ for Skype uses SkypeOut credits for voice communication, ensuring that calls will be cost-effective no matter how long the distance. The service had previously been available for other mobile devices like BlackBerry ( News - Alert) RIM, Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Palm OS.
A multimedia and Internet-enabled quad-band mobile device, the iPhone functions as both a camera phone and multimedia player, and is also equipped for text messaging and visual voicemail, in addition to Internet services like email, web browsing and local WiFi communications, call center and customer relationship management industries.
