By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The realXtend open source virtual reality platform is accelerating with the growing ecosystem, according to Global Connexus. Global Connexus is working in cooperation with the City of Oulu, Finland and Oulu Innovation. In order to develop the world’s best virtual world platform, Nokia (News - Alert) and the City of Oulu have also joined the supporters of realExtend project.

The City of Oulu has announced plans of using realXtend to meet the future technological needs of its citizens. This includes using realXtend as a tool for developing the educational system in cooperation with the “School of the Future” project.

According to Matti Pennanen, mayor, City of Oulu, “Our strategy in Oulu is to support companies that combine technological expertise with cultural and artistic skills. Interactive content and creative industries are a part of our future mission. The City of Oulu already provides free wireless Internet access to citizens and visitors. With the creation of realXtend in Oulu, our region steps in the exciting frontier of virtual world technology.”

The realXtend virtual reality platform is a non-profit project which had its first public release in February. The developers of this project, which is being administered by Oulu Innovation, are Ludocraft Ltd. and Admino Technologies Ltd. The objective of this project is to develop a global, standardized 3D-web of virtual worlds by making virtual world technologies available to everyone for free.

realXtend is all set to create a rich user experience which is rarely seen in a virtual world platform. This will be made possible with features such as highly-customizable avatars, 3D objects, lights and shadows, scriptable teleports between worlds, voice chat, desktop application sharing and easy Web page integration. The applications which will be part of the platform consist of virtual conferencing, collaborative workspaces, immersive education, 3D modeling and multi-player games.

Jari Alvinen, director of compatibility and industry collaboration at Nokia, stated, “Nokia supports the realXtend project and objective of creating an open platform and interoperability for virtual worlds. realXtend has gained remarkable co-operation and adoption with other virtual world developers and solution providers. The large scale strategic development of this technology will spearhead virtual worlds for everyone.”
