HomeGrid's Support to G.hn by ITU-T to Continue

By Arvind Arora, TMCnet Contributing Editor

HomeGrid Forum, a non-profit trade group engaged in supporting the G.hn standardization efforts for advanced home networking worldwide, has announced it will continue offering its cooperation towards development of the G.hn next generation home networking standard being promoted by the International Telecommunication Union’s Standardization Sector (ITU-T).

The members of HomeGrid Forum are reviewing technical papers for submission to G.hn through teleconferencing every week. Through the review process, the member companies are able to get input and feedback that might help them make quality submissions.

G.hn is the next generation standard for existing-wire home networking, which will be a wired and complementary counterpart to the WiFi (News - Alert) wireless home networking standard. G.hn has targeted gigabit per second data rates and will be operable upon all three types of home wires, including coaxial, powerline and phone wires.

The expected benefits of the G.hn standard are lower equipment development costs and lower deployment costs for service providers. A number of service providers, consumer electronics and information technology manufacturers from various parts of the world are contributing in the standardization and evolution of the standard.

The ITU Telecommunications Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is a part of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that analyzes technical and operating questions, and issues recommendations for ensuring consensus and establishing standards for the telecommunications industry worldwide.

HomeGrid Forum is a non-profit trade group that promotes the G.hn standardization efforts being made by ITU-T, for establishing the standards for advanced home networking. The forum analyzes certification and interoperability of G.hn-compliant products and supports the industry alliances in adoption of the new G.hn standard.

Matthew Theall, president of HomeGrid Forum, said that the member companies are committed to making G.hn a reality in a timely fashion, and the forum members contributed more than half of the technical papers at the past two ITU-T G.hn meetings.

Richard L. Stuart, chair of the ITU group engaged in development of G.hn, commented that the group continues to be encouraged by HomeGrid members’ commitment to collaboration, as demonstrated by the large number of jointly-supported technical submissions.

Stuart noted that close cooperation between the ITU and HomeGrid Forum will accelerate completion of the G.hn Recommendation, enabling customers to deploy G.hn products much sooner.
