As mobile TV and the sophistication of broadband services combine to offer more effective and appealing services, one company is heightening the demand with their new announced partnership.
Sling Media Inc. and 3 Group will join forces to allow users to take their home TV programs with them while on the go, via their mobile devices.
This announcement is part of today's global launch from Hutchison Whampoa of the X-Series from 3. The X-Series offers new capabilities for mobile and internet convergence, and provides users with mobile broadband- enabled handsets that offer innovative functionality. The first two phones in this series include the the Nokia (

Commenting on today's launch of X-Series, Canning Fok, Group Managing Director of Hutchison Whampoa, said in a statement, "This is the internet as it was meant to be and what people have been waiting for. Mobile broadband is the natural next step for mobile services, extending the full power of the internet to mobile handsets. By partnering with the leaders of the internet and the leading handset makers, the X-Series from 3 will give everyone access to more of what they want, when they want it, and however much of it they want, all free when they use it."
When 3 customers purchase one of these handsets along with a Slingbox they are also provided with the Sling Player Mobile service, over a 3G
network connection, which enables them to view any program they would at home, on their mobile. The service even allows control of the recording, pausing and programming of recorders.
The Slingbox functions by redirecting a "single live TV stream from a standard cable connection, cable box, satellite receiver, or PVR to the viewers PC-located anywhere in the home or anywhere in the world—or 3G handset," the company explained in a news release.
The players will be marketed to consumers in the UK in December and other markets in 2007.
