Symbian ( News - Alert) is planning to add a new graphics architecture and enhanced networking ability to its mobile OS, according to an announcement from the company yesterday.
Called ScreenPlay, Symbian’s new technology boasts minimal power usage and features a layered effect, in which different applications deliver graphics and information on one screen. It’s primarily designed for the delivery of high-def video, gaming, and animated interfaces.
Careful analysis of the OS has helped engineers to rewrite the code to save power. Battery life may be increasing by only 8 percent a year, but the demands for power have been far outpacing the increases each year. The improvements originate with a graphics composition engine within the OS, which gives users more context to applications, in addition to a 3-D experience.
Symbian has also introduced an IP networking architecture called FreeWay that will permit switching between high-speed networks like WiMax and 3G and allow clear VoIP calling. FreeWay should let users to download MP3 music files in seconds.
