Wayport Delivers Applications to HealthSouth

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

HealthSouth Corporation, the nation’s largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services, has entered into an agreement with Wayport, Inc., to provide public and private applications and services. This includes complimentary wireless Internet access at the company’s rehabilitation hospitals.

According to the agreement, the patients, guests, physicians and staff will get the Wi-Fi Internet access free of charge. Wayport’s NaviCity, a unique Yahoo!-based portal that serves up location- specific information complements the public access with which visitors can view local restaurants and services, local ads, local content and other features. Also, each location will offer at least one public PC station, Wayport’s CyberCenter express unit.

Offering its services throughout each hospital, including patient rooms, cafeterias, waiting rooms and other common areas, Wayport enables public and private-side applications, services and devices on a single converged network. Twelve trial locations have already been installed and are already operational. HealthSouth currently operates 94 rehabilitation hospitals.

Assisting the hospitals keep their network uptime at a maximum and mitigating the risks involved with network failures or outages, Wayport will provide WAN failover services to the hospital. The company says it is pleased to be able to work with HealthSouth as we continue to develop applications and services dedicated to the needs of healthcare professionals and facilities. The company feels, as more and more healthcare providers embrace the benefits of public and private Wi-Fi applications in their hospitals, this will be a good trend.

Wayport’s expertise in improving patient and physician services for healthcare includes design, installation, support and maintenance services. Support services include 24/7 network monitoring and a 24/7 in-house call center for end-user support. Through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, outpatient rehabilitation satellites, and home health agencies, HealthSouth serves more than 250,000 patients annually.

“Wayport brings a unique service offering to our hospitals. We are pleased to be able to offer free wireless Internet access to our patients and their families,” said Rusty Yeager, HealthSouth deputy chief information officer. “This new service will allow patients and visitors to use their wireless-enabled personal computers to stay connected.”
