Catapult Technology Awarded $91 Million Contract

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Catapult Technology Ltd. has recently been awarded a five year contract of $91 million to replace the wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi), location-based infrastructure across the 236 facilities of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). According to the contract, Catapult will first survey all the VA locations to ascertain the Wi-Fi infrastructure equipment requirements.

Once the requirements have been gathered and finalized, Catapult will implement a Cisco (News - Alert)-based Wi-Fi solution across all the facilities. This project will also address the data and telecommunication needs of the facilities.

The contract has been awarded under the Veterans Technology Services (VETS) Government wide Acquisition Contract (GWAC). It is the second largest contract for Catapult Technology. Catapult Technology is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned (SDVO) firm that provides its services to both the federal government and the private sector. This SDVOB IT prime contractor to the federal government is ISO 9001:2000 registered.  It is also a Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CMMI Level 3 company.

With this project, Catapult will be able to increase its presence in the telecommunications business. Randy J. Slager, the CEO, Chairman and Founder of Catapult has stated that, “The VA chose Catapult for this project because of our ability to handle projects of considerable size, scope, and complexity. The VA can expect to streamline data sharing and become more efficient as a result of the Wi-Fi implementation.”

The Wi-Fi location-based infrastructure being used by the VA consists of inconsistent equipment and manufacturers. An upgrade by Catapult will help to streamline the same in order to meet the requirements of both the VA Office of Cyber and Information Security (OCIS) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Future technology requirements will also be addressed by this upgrade.

With the Wi-Fi implementation, data sharing between the 236 VA facilities will become a reality, i.e., medical personnel will be able to share the results of an examination such as an X-ray from any computer within a facility. This information can be shared either internally or with any of the 235 facilities. There is no need for a PC to be plugged in since the data will be transferred wirelessly.
