Chunghwa Telecom (News - Alert) and Nortel will join forces to develop a range of wireless broadband and network solutions based on WiMAX technologies.
According to the agreement, Chunghwa Telecom and Nortel (News - Alert) will work together to develop end-to-end solutions for WiMAX Network Operations Support Systems (NOSS), WiMAX (News - Alert) performance monitoring systems, and WiMAX application clients.
"As Taiwan's largest integrated telecommunications operator, Chunghwa Telecom has extensive experience in telecommunication network operations and in developing network management systems. Chunghwa Telecom is a pioneer in the development of WiMAX technology, which is demonstrated by its major role in the government's 'M-Taiwan' project," said Dr. Liang Lung-Sing, president, telecommunication laboratories, Chunghwa Telecom, in a statement. "The joint development plans we are outlining with Nortel demonstrate our commitment to setting standards for next-generation telecommunications and network infrastructure."
Chunghwa Telecom and Nortel are already jointly involved in projects such as the recently launched Taiwan Mobile Health Services, which exploits WiMAX technology to deliver high-speed wireless broadband access and remote medical care. Last year, the two companies also announced that they would build Taiwan's first integrated Mobile WiMAX network for Yilan County, offering services including M Learning, M-Commerce, M-Tour, as well as video surveillance and IPTV services.
"Nortel is once again joining forces with market leader and WiMAX early-adopter Chunghwa Telecom to harness the technology prowess and leadership of Taiwan," said Jackson Wu, president, Greater China, Nortel, in a statement. "Through our ongoing relationship with Chunghwa Telecom, we plan to focus our joint resources on delivering the services and solutions that will drive the WiMAX market in Taiwan and benefit customers around the globe."
