Texas Instruments Boosts 2.4GHz Range w/ AirWire Antenna

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Texas Instruments (News - Alert) has bolstered 2.4 GHz range with an internally integrated AirWire Antenna from Pinyon Technologies. The antenna will also be included in a reference design for the CC2430 and CC2510. Several reference designs will be provided for the Low Power RF ICs by Texas Instruments, so that the customer will be able to decide on a design and get started with it quickly.

According to Debashis Bagchi, the CEO of Pinyon Technologies, “Pinyon's resonant slot PCB based AirWire antenna has a gain of 3-5 dBi based on its design. The high gain is complimented by the antennas unique band pass filtering properties that rejects noise. Its two layer board design easily integrates to any 2.4GHz radio. Pinyon will help OEM's integrate the antenna onto the main board to expedite the time to market.”

Pinyon Technologies designs and sells antenna solutions that are based on its patented AirWire technology. This technology is designed for WiFi (News - Alert), WiMax, Bluetooth, UWB and mobile applications and is also well suited for applications that require high gain in a noisy multipath environment.

The Pinyon high-gain antenna, which records a range of 270m, is ideal for those applications that are looking to achieve the longest range for a given direction. By utilizing the high-gain antenna, applications like remote control for a set range can reduce the output power being transmitted from the CC2510.

Texas Instruments has also released a 2.4GHz RF Front End chip, the CC2591. CC2591 is a range extender for existing and future 2.4GHz transceivers, transmitters and System-On-Chip. It allows the output power to be increased up to 22dBm and the receiver sensitivity to be improved up to 6dB. The two reference designs that utilize the CC2591 are CC2430+CC2591 and the CC2520+CC2591.

Range test with a standard antenna and reduced power from CC2591 has been conducted by Texas Instruments beyond 1.5 miles. While using Pinyon’s high gain AirWire antenna and maximum power from CC2591, the range will be greater than 1.5 miles at 2.4GHz. The Pinyon antenna gives 2.4GHz customers the advantage of an integrated high-gain antenna providing a longer range, or for a set range, a lower current consumption.
