In-Stat: Mobile Video Will Reach Potential in 2008

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Anyone with ties to or interest in the U.S. political scene is looking ahead to 2008 as a year when important changes to the country’s governmental leadership will take place.

Meanwhile, technology market analyst firm In-Stat has its eye on 2008 for another reason: that’s when the market for mobile video content is projected to start demonstrating its long-term potential.

In a report out today, In-Stat said that mobile video (content defined as productions longer than 30 minutes) currently is in its infancy, but will start to mature two years hence.

In-Stat analyst Michael Inouye predicts that mobile video’s greatest potential is to complement, rather than destroy, the existing video industry.

“For example, there will be over 50 million portable media players in use worldwide by 2008,” Inouye said in a statement. “The portable/mobile long form video market will not likely cannibalize sales from the DVD and other traditional markets, but rather, supplement top-line growth.”

During the course of recent research, In-Stat also found that:
  • It’s unclear whether users will prefer integrated multimedia cell phones or separate devices for voice and multimedia
  • By 2009, subscribers to mobile video likely will represent 10 percent of U.S. wireless subscribers
  • About one in eight mobile users surveyed expressed interest in mobile video for the cellular market
