AT&T Unveils New GoPhone Prepaid PlanBy Gary Kim, Contributing Editor AT&T's (News - Alert) new "Gophone" prepaid plan launches May 11, offering unlimited nationwide calling for $3 a day. The new plan uses the same pay per use rates for text messaging and data access as are available with all other GoPhone “Pay As You Go” plans. Casual text rates are 20 cents per minute.
For those users who primarily call other AT&T subscribers, the carrier also offers an Unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile plan, providing unlimited calling to and from all 78 million AT&T customers, and $0.10 for all other calls, for $1 a day.
The move represents a growing recognition that the prepaid segment of the wireless market is growing and allows users a greater degree of control over their usage.
At the same time, the terms and conditions quickly allow users to figure out they probably are better off sticking with a post-paid plan. That's what offer positioning is all about, to some extent.
AT&T offers more options for prepaid service, but packages it in ways that will convince most post-paid users they are better off just sticking with their current plans.
AT&T GoPhone packages, which include a new device plus $15 airtime credit, are available in all AT&T stores, as well as other retail locations. Current GoPhone customers will be able to switch to the unlimited calling plan by calling 611 from their handset, or 800-901-9878 from a landline phone. Feature packages such as unlimited text messaging for $19.99 can be added by choosing the option "Buy Features."
