BigBand Debuts IP Video Delivery Product

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

BigBand has announced it developed a new IP video delivery product called vIP PASS which will enable the delivery of Web-based and managed video services to a broad range of devices via DOCSIS 3.0 modems.

BigBand Networks (News - Alert) provides broadband service providers with innovative network solutions designed to make it easier to move, manage and monetize video.

The vIP PASS solution is designed to combine the service providers existing network and BigBand’s digital video networking architecture to seamlessly add Web or broadband video services to the providers’ portfolio.

Operators will benefit from the ability to offer video services to a variety of consumer devices, realize new means to generate revenue and also save millions in capital expenditures.

In this turbulent economy, companies are looking for more savings. BigBand's estimates indicate that the new solution has the ability to save the industry up to 75 percent of its capital expenditures for CMTS expansions, or up to $2 billion over the next two years.

“We created vIP PASS in direct response to our customers’ need to meet the huge demand for high quality video services, which are growing at unprecedented rates across the network. The suite enables our digital video networking platforms to become an efficient IP video delivery system,” said David Heard, BigBand's Chief Operating Officer.

BigBand advises service providers not to rely on equipment that is built to transfer text and voice data to deliver videos. Rather, they should use custom built solutions like their vIP PASS to handle video traffic.

The company said that even though there are other products that are available to deliver videos, they are not capable of accommodating to the increasing volume of video traffic. In addition to high costs for video transport, they also lack the tools and video service quality mechanisms necessary to ensure a consistently high quality video experience, the company said.

vIP PASS is built on BigBand’s proven QAM platforms, video control plane technology, video QoS, and performance and viewership tools and is completely capable of overcoming all the complexities of delivering video services.

The company also said that vIP PASS further simplifies video management by enabling operators to use one interface for managing video services, whether these services are delivered to set-top boxes or other devices.
