snom VoIP Phones Recognized as Energy-Efficient

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone developer and manufacturer snom technology AG today announced that its VoIP phone portfolio has received the highest "green" standard in a recent test conducted by the Research Group for Telecommunication Networks at the Frankfurt Main University of Applied Sciences (FH Frankfurt) in Germany.

After testing snom’s SIP-based phones against six other competing VoIP handsets, in a recent lab study, the company achieved top marks for being the most energy efficient.

The trials were carried out over a 3-month period by FH Frankfurt research assistants and engineers who examined 23 VoIP phones by seven major manufacturers. According to the researchers, snom phones used the least amount of energy in every use scenario investigated. These settings ranged from idle mode, conversation, idle mode after a conversation, and three-way conference.

This is proof that companies that use snom products are not only saving money on electricity, but are also reducing their carbon footprint and keeping up with today's green IT strategy.

"When developing our telephones we have always attached a great importance on implementing sophisticated technology in an energy-efficient manner," said Dusan Aleksis, head of hardware development at snom. "Keeping power consumption as low as possible has always been one of our most important goals in the development of snom phones."

The FH Frankfurt research group found that VoIP phones featuring large illuminated displays usually consume the most power. Aware (News - Alert) of this energy-sucking drawback, snom created its illumination displays to automatically switch off 30 seconds after a phone conversation has ended.

When in standby mode, the snom 370 uses up to 3.5 watts less than similar telephones by other manufacturers. In order to create realistic usage conditions for the different readings, the FH Frankfurt looked at the VoIP phone on two different switches: the ALL8084, an eight-port switch 10/100 Mbit half/full duplex, four of these ports with automatic PoE Classification Recognition, and the ALL8089, an unmanaged layer-2 switch with eight Fast Ethernet ports and maximum PoE support on all ports.

Founded in 1996, snom technology AG creates and manufactures Voice over IP (VoIP) telephones and related equipment based on the IETF open standard, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert)).

The company is recognized for its superior, customizable and cost-effective business solutions, and is dedicated to high security standards.

All of snom's software is housed in the firmware on the phones which makes it easier for users to download updates and new features. The company’s customers benefit from the interoperability and flexibility that the snom telephones offer, including plug and play integration and universal compatibility with any SIP-based telephony platform.
