AT&T to Manage IP Traffic for Salvation Army's Eastern Territory
By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor
AT&T just inked a contract with The Salvation Army to manage the non-profit organization’s IP traffic for its USA Eastern territory.
The contract calls for AT&T ( News - Alert) to provide The Salvation Army with Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS ) technology to manage Internet Protocol (IP) traffic at the organization's seven locations in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed at press time.
The Salvation Army will use AT&T's MPLS-based Private Network Transport (PNT) service for better security when delivering public and private IP traffic for both its corporate offices in West Nyack, New York, and its business continuity site in Syracuse, New York. AT&T's MPLS services will be managed by the telecom.
“The Salvation Army is committed to doing the most good with the resources provided by our donors,” said Paul Kelly, director of Information Technology for The Salvation Army, in a statement. “This commitment was the driving force behind the decision to contract with AT&T.”
Kelly continued: “AT&T offered a highly cost-effective solution that met our security and scalability requirements, not only for today but for future network expansions. Our historical relationship with AT&T gives us great confidence that this new venture will be successful.”
AT&T's network design will accommodate The Salvation Army's future growth by providing the technology needed to increase the network's flexibility and scalability to support increases in application traffic and network capacity as the organization opens additional locations.
AT&T also announced today the launch of AT&T Homezone, an expanded service that features remote access to home entertainment, combining AT&T | DISH network and AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet services, Internet-Based video on demand, music on demand and digital photo-sharing into a single device.
The service is available today across AT&T's broadband coverage area. (Service will not be immediately available in Connecticut). The telecom first made the service available in San Antonio, San Diego and throughout Ohio this summer.
The service seems to act like a universal remote control for all of the customer's entertainment needs. It integrates Internet-based video with satellite TV programming, bringing Internet content from the desktop to their TV screens and stereos. It also features digital videorecording, movies on demand, photo and music-sharing and storage for both.
