KT Networks' New Smartphone will do Mobile VoIP, Thanks to GIPS

By Patrick Barnard, Senior Web Editor, TMCnet

KT Networks, a network integration specialist and part of KT (formerly Korea Telecom (News - Alert)), is using Global IP Solutions’ voice processing solutions to bring HD voice capabilities to its new Windows Mobile smartphone.

“We knew it was necessary to use a VoIP product for KT (News - Alert) Networks' smartphone that would provide our customers with superior voice quality, especially under challenged network conditions,” said Kim Young-Joo, vice president, KT Networks, in a release. “GIPS was able to handle all the complex voice processing tasks that met KT Networks exacting standards.”

A company release contained no information about the new smartphone, other than to say it will be “sleek” and “feature rich.” No word on when it will be available.

Mobile VoIP is particularly attractive to companies with mobile workers, since it helps significantly reduce telecommunications costs. In the U.S., some network providers (reluctantly) allow subscribers to use mobile VoIP over their networks, while others prohibit it, since the network is unable to support that type of traffic. Some mobile VoIP solutions work over the data layer of carriers’ 3G networks while others require the user to find a WiFi (News - Alert) hotspot. By the same token, only certain mobile devices will support mobile VoIP. Users typically have to download a software client in order to use a mobile VoIP solution.

GIPS VoiceEngine improves mobile VoIP services by optimizing bandwidth – which is important since today’s mobile networks are being taxed with ever-increasing voice and data traffic. At the same time, companies are demanding better queslity of service – including HD-quality service for crystal clear connections.

GIPS’ cutting-edge technology for processing real-time voice and video over IP is used globally by hundreds of millions of users every day. With this technology residing on KT Networks’ sleek, advanced new mobile device, users will gain a high quality communications experience.

In May GIPS released the results of a poll it took during a recent webinar it held on HD voice. In the poll of 186 attendees, a third of respondents thought HD voice quality would improve overall productivity in the workplace, while 57 percent said conference calling would also be a top benefit. Sixteen percent believed HD’s greatest impact would be felt in call centers.

As voice technology continues to migrate from circuit-switched services to modern IP-based network foundations, call quality has yet to receive straight “A’s” in business and consumer use. Enter HD voice technology: GIPS’ advanced wideband CODECs and VoiceEngines solve the issues related to IP networks such as delay, jitter and echo, is capable of delivering high quality IP voice regardless of network conditions.

“The results validate our belief that there are many opportunities in corporate America that can greatly benefit from high definition voice,” said Joyce Kim, chief marketing officer at GIPS, in a release. “As a leader in providing the core technology for HD voice, a growing importance for call center operations, conferencing and overall employee productivity; these results demonstrate the value GIPS continues to deliver to its customers worldwide.”
