Motorola Unveils Vehicle Mounted Modem VMM 4300 for Ensuring Public Safety

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Motorola (News - Alert) Enterprise Mobility Solutions has announced a new addition to its innovative Mesh Wide Area Network portfolio, the Vehicle Mounted Modem (VMM) 4300, which can deliver wireless broadband connectivity at highway speeds.

The VMM 4300 allows public transport organizations and public safety agencies to extend mobile applications and video to buses, trains, public works vehicles and police cars for enhancing productivity and safety.

“Extending wireless broadband access to moving vehicles requires technologies that can ensure reliable and secure connectivity despite environmental challenges that can negatively affect service,” said Jake Brecheen, chief systems architect, Pro2Serve.

“As transportation agencies look to leverage bandwidth intensive applications like video, they will need technologies that can deliver and sustain high throughput rates over a wide range of vehicle speeds,” added Brecheen.

Wireless technologies are required in the transportation sector as they provide security and safety to passengers and also improve operational efficiencies. They enable easy implementation of passenger services to increase the attractiveness of public transportation.

The VMM 4300 solution leverages Motorola’s MeshConnex routing technology and Opportunistic Radio Link Adaptation (ORLA) for enabling secure mobile access to multiple voice, video and data applications including advanced passenger information services.

Along with a well-designed MWAN 4300 network, the Motorola solution can offer reliable multi-megabit connections to a train or bus. This improves passenger safety, streamlines operations and also offers Wi-Fi connections during the commute.

“Motorola continues to innovate in delivering mobile mesh technologies to enterprise and government customers worldwide,” said Chip Yager, director of operations, Mesh Networks Product Group, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions.

He added that this new product in the WAN portfolio allows transportation agencies to monitor the safety of passengers, track equipment usage and provide travelers with access to real-time information or the Internet. Public safety professionals can use live video surveillance footage to gain situational awareness regarding the scenes of incidents.

Police cars are advanced technology hubs with computers, multiple cameras and communication devices, said Motorola. The data rates provided by the MWAN 4300 network enable applications like streaming videos from a moving vehicle or accessing real-time video surveillance footage for better situational awareness.

The high power radio in the Motorola VMM 4300 can be configured in a 5.8, 5.4 or 4.9 GHz band for wireless backhaul connectivity. It can be installed in the trunk of a police car, providing megabit data connections even during high-speed maneuvers.
