Conferencing Provider Vidyo Wins Technology Innovation AwardBy Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor Vidyo, Inc., a conferencing solutions provider delivering personal telepresence, announced today the company won the Wall Street Journal 2010 Technology Innovation Award, nudging out other formidable nominees including Microsoft (News - Alert), to win the top honor in the "Network/Internet Technologies/Broadband" category. "Internet videoconferencing has been around for a few years, but the calls typically are characterized by jerky, low-resolution video. More-realistic, high-resolution videoconferencing systems generally require dedicated communications lines and expensive equipment, limiting their use," the WSJ noted. Officials with Vidyo (News - Alert) said their company is the first to offer unprecedented error resiliency and eliminate the latency of existing MCU-based videoconferencing offerings. This, company officials said, enables the delivery of natural, high-quality, multi-party video over the Internet, LTE (News - Alert), 3G and 4G networks - for a fraction of the cost. "The judges were very impressed with the Vidyo technology," said John M. Leger, News Editor, Wall Street Journal who oversees the awards. Leger said the judges felt Vidyo offered significant cost benefits because it uses standard Internet lines and doesn't require expensive networks. This is the latest honor in a series of other awards Vidyo has recently garnered for its patented videoconferencing solution, based on its VidyoRouter architecture. "We have worked hard to provide the videoconferencing world with an alternative solution to systems that either demand too much time, money and network maintenance or can't deliver a telepresence-level, easy-to-use experience," said Ofer Shapiro (News - Alert), CEO and co-founder of Vidyo. Shapiro said the company is extremely honored by this high recognition from the Wall Street Journal. “It is gratifying to know that the enormous benefits of Vidyo's disruptive technology have not escaped the Journal's thorough assessment."
