Infonetics Research Releases Highlights of Next Generation Optical Service Provider Survey

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Infonetics Research announced the release of excerpts from its “Optical Equipment Features and Vendor Leadership: Global Service Provider Survey” featuring optical vendor ratings by carriers around the world.

According to the survey, Ciena, Alcatel-Lucent, and Huawei (News - Alert) top the list of vendors that carriers consider to be among the top three optical vendors. The research agency said it has positioned “a surprise vendor” fourth on the list.

While Huawei leads vendors under evaluation for purchase in the next year, Alcatel-Lucent and Ciena follow. Ciena dominates the 40G/100G leadership rankings, with a second vendor not far behind.

Infonetics (News - Alert) Survey reveals that Alcatel-Lucent and Ciena top the list of vendors that carriers consider to be leaders in the P-OTS market, with several other vendors following.

Huawei, according to the survey, has the highest percentage of service providers that think they are making the best technology investments today that will result in products needed for future networks.

The survey, which is part of Infonetics' Continuous Research Service (CRS) series of analyst reports and surveys about the optical market, also finds that the most-missed optical equipment feature by carriers is software related, and not hardware related.

“Our survey of telecom operators makes it clear that they don't necessarily share the stereotypical view of Huawei that exists in the vendor community. Huawei is consistently given higher marks each year by western carriers,” said Andrew Schmitt, Infonetics Research's (News - Alert) directing analyst for optical, in a statement.

Recently Infonetics Research also released excerpts from its updated 10G/40G/100G Optical Transceivers Market Size and Forecast. In this report, Infonetics increased its forecast for the combined 10G, 40G, and 100G transceiver and transponder market, expecting it to grow to $2.14 billion worldwide in 2014.
