NetQoS Intros E-book for VoIP Network Managers

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

As anyone who is involved with managing wide area networks (WANs) knows, focusing on device availability and fault management is only one aspect of ensuring effective routing of network traffic. In the real world, the most important thing is actual performance.

Performance is exactly the focus of NetQoS, a company that was founded in 1999 to build tools large organizations need to effectively manage service levels for communications networks. Avoiding application performance issues, the company’s founders (Joel Trammell and Cathy Fulton) recognize, requires pragmatic solutions that are developed for the real world, not lab conditions.

Today, NetQoS (News - Alert) offers a variety of network management products and services, designed for use by service providers, government organization and large enterprises. The company’s seven product suites (Performance Center, ReporterAnalyzer, Unified Communications Monitor, GigaStor, Trade Monitor, NetVoyant, and SuperAgent) cover application monitoring, traffic analysis, packet capture, and other aspects of network management.

On Tuesday, the company released a new resource geared toward anyone who is involved with Voice over IP (VoIP) network management: a new e-book by software architect Jeff Hicks (News - Alert). The book, “Do You See What I’m Saying? Managing VoIP Quality of Experience on Your Network,” includes a chapter on unified communications (UC).

“Network convergence is forcing network managers to have specialized application expertise they didn’t need in the past,” Hicks said, in a statement. “This e-book equips the network manager with the knowledge needed to be successful in managing VoIP quality of experience on the network, which is the first step down the path toward truly unified communications.”

The 115-page e-book has four chapters: “Introduction to VoIP Protocols,” “VoIP Call Setup Performance,” “VoIP Call Quality Performance,” and “The Road to Unified Communications (News - Alert).”

Network and IT professionals can use the book as a resource to clarify and streamline the complexities of managing communications networks. It covers everything from identifying VoIP performance metrics to isolating protocol details that affect performance.

In keeping with NetQoS’ philosophy regarding focus on performance, the new e-book addresses the changing nature of network management. In the book, Hicks notes that while once the network manager was responsible only for the network itself, today that’s changing, with specialized application expertise needed as well.

“In many cases, VoIP is just the entry point for rolling out new unified communications applications, such as real-time dashboards, video, and presence,” Hicks writes in the book. “Therefore, success is doubly critical for organizations deploying VoIP.”

For a limited time, NetQoS is offering complimentary copies of the e-book to visitors who fill out a short registration form here.
