HD VoIP Enables Truly Lifelike Audio Quality for Phone Calls

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Telephones are such a ubiquitous part of our personal and business lives, it’s hard to imagine a time before long-distance voice communications entered the scene. Telephony has gone through a number of evolutions over the years, migrating from analog to digital and most recently to VoIP. Each step in the evolution brought new advantages, such as the ability to instantaneously connect long distance calls.

One thing hasn’t changed much, though: voice quality. Talking on the phone is never quite as effective a means of communication as speaking with someone in person, because some loss of voice clarity always occurs.

But, with modern audio technologies, this limitation is starting to change. In the future, it will no longer be necessary to spell out confirmation codes or names (“M as in Mary, D as in Dog…”) or strain to figure out which person in a conference call is speaking.

To explore the technologies that are making high definition audio for phone calls possible, AudioCodes and Technology Marketing Corporation will be co-hosting a free Webinar on November 18 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time (11:00 a.m. Pacific Time). The Web event, “HD VoIP – The Next Sound Barrier?” will explore audio limitations the public switched telephony network enforces on all kinds of phones.

The online event’s co-presenters  — Alan Percy, director of market development at AudioCodes and Erik Linask (News - Alert), group managing editor at TMC — will discuss what’s known in the industry as the “3.4 kHs sound barrier” and how high-def VoIP is breaking through this ceiling to achieve truly lifelike audio for phone calls.
