XConnect, Others Form Brazilian VoIP Peering Federation

Seven companies that provide VoIP  services and related products in Brazil announced Tuesday the formation of an industry organization for voice service providers in that country.
Founding members of Brazilian VoIP Peering ( News - Alert) Federation are:

Tellfree, IP telephony provider that serves corporate and residential markets

iVoz.net, provider of value-added VoIP services for corporate and residential markets
-
GlobalNova, telecom company focused mainly in pre-paid phone cards, and residential/corporate VoIP
-
Conceito Telecom, VoIP and telecom services provider
-
Easytone, telecom company with national coverage using an MPLS network
The organization will be managed by XConnect ( News - Alert), a company that specializes in VoIP peering solutions. Brazilian interconnectivity solutions provider Terremark do Brasil Ltd. will provide Ethernet connectivity and co-location services for the new organization.
In a news release describing Brazilian VoIP Peering Federation, the companies involved said that this organization is the first of its kind in South America, and the second such federation worldwide—the first was the XConnect-run SIP-Exchange, founded last year in conjunction with a group of Netherlands-based multiple service operators (MSOs).
The purpose of the Brazilian organization is to enable its members “to exchange VoIP traffic between their subscribers directly over IP networks, completely bypassing traditional phone networks and thereby eliminating PSTN interconnection fees and the feature-limitations and quality issues associated with PSTN-VoIP transcoding.”
Additionally, members of the organization will have shared access to multimedia IP communications services such as video and presence.
According to the group’s news release, XConnect was selected to manage this network of VoIP traffic because of its ability to provide ENUM registry management, full signaling interoperability between the disparate operators, and comprehensive identity and security.
“We commend the foresight of the Brazilian VoIP Service Providers in identifying the importance of VoIP peering in order to differentiate their services from the traditional PSTN,” XConnect CEO Eli Katz said in a statement. “Peering will enable them to launch new services and features on a nationwide basis and allow them to eliminate unnecessary PSTN charges.”
Katz added: “We believe that this national federation will be the second of many, and that XConnect's technology and infrastructure is unique in offering comprehensive solutions to the Registry, Signaling, Security and Commercial challenges inherent in VoIP Peering.”
Hugo Zanon, director of Terremakr’s Brazil operations, expressed excitement that his company was selected to provide supporting communications infrastructure for the new organization.
“The synergies between XConnect's VoIP Peering offer and Terremark's Exchange Services Platform will create an unparallel and unique value proposition for the VoIP Service Providers operating in Brazil,” Zanon said in a statement.
Daniel Duarte, general manager for Tellfree; Andre Ito, general manager for Easytone; and Capriles Smith, business director at TDKom, all said that the VoIP market in Brazil is growing rapidly, and that Brazilian VoIP Peering Federation will help ensure that growth is sustainable.
Claudio Roberto da Silva, director of Conceito’s relationship and operations division, expressed a similar sentiment.
“VoIP is the most exciting and industry changing telecom technology in the past 100 years,” da Silva said in a statement. “To achieve maximum quality while enabling innovative new IP based services, VoIP peering is a necessity. VoIP Peering requires complex technical expertise and experience that XConnect brings to the table, and to which the new Brazilian Federation is committed.”
“The XConnect federation will allow all associated operators to exchange traffic, reduce operational costs, gain access to leading edge technologies and improve the quality of service provided to customers,” added GlobalNova network operations manager Marcio Zago, in a statement.
