Retell's Voice Firewall to Stop PABX Toll Fraud

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

With an increase of hacking into office phone systems or ‘phreaking’ also known as “PABX” becoming prevalent, U.K.-based Retell Limited has developed a Voice Firewall that can stop calls to numbers which have been pre-programmed by the owner.

PABX is done by fraudsters who dial into a phone system and guess mail or system passwords available at factory settings of the device. This allows them to make calls without the knowledge of the owner. The problem is not solved even if the PABX is password protected as they can gain access to the system with some back door engineering or developer password, ReTell warns.

Retell manufactures call recording circuit cards. The company offers a wide range of products which are designed to enhance business performance through reseller partners. This includes call recording for single or multiple lines, call logging, business answering machines, on hold advertising and announcements and fax and voice servers.

A spokesperson for the company said their call recording system, Sense Call Analyzer, already included integrated call management which reports unwanted phone activity, costs and call volumes and was ready for the next phase of development which included an “active” feature for adding announcements to calls. Along with this came the need to incorporate a firewall to stop fraudulent activity.

Now, Sense Voice Firewall monitors dialed calls and electronically disconnects calls to unauthorized numbers which are preset by owners also, the Firewall can be programmed to allow calls only during working hours and prevent calls made to unauthorized numbers during or after working hours.

In addition, the offering can be set to allow only calls made to certain numbers such as emergency services and easily installed between the network entry point and any PABX.
