Juniper Boosts Capacity for IPTV
By Erik Linask, Associate Editor, Internet Telephony magazine
Broadband penetration in all corners of the globe is steadily creeping towards a peak, and now VoIP is also no longer an unknown to subscribers. The next service that customers are likely to adopt in large numbers is IPTV ( News - Alert). In fact, in parts of Asia, IPTV is already a sizable revenue generator.
Jiangsu Telecom, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Telecom ( News - Alert), in fact is ramping up its capabilities to keep pace with subscriber demands. In that effort, it has deployed resilient, high availability E320 Broadband Service Routers (BSRs) from Juniper Networks ( News - Alert), which will allow the company to better distribute IPTV, VoD, and other IP services to its subscriber base.
“IPTV has been well received in China, and while basic Internet access has driven China’s rapid broadband subscriber growth, the market is now turning to value-added services, such as those offered by Jiangsu Telecom’s expanded network,” said Eric Yu, Juniper’s vice president of Greater China.
Juniper’s E320 system capacity, density, and scalability all allow Jiangsu Telecom to maximize the number of customers it can support and new services it can roll out on its network, and come as an adjunct to the standard QoS and resiliency features Juniper provides — all of which help ensure Jiangsu can meet or exceed service delivery expectations. The E320, in fact, boasts unsurpassed capacity, according to Juniper, and supports GigE and 10 GigE interfaces required to deliver today’s bandwidth intensive content and services to a large subscriber base.
The E320 router features subscriber management functions and advanced QoS designed specifically for a multiplay environment, and runs on — as do all of Juniper’s E-series routers — the proven JUNOSe Operating System. JUNOS has been designed with efficient quad play service delivery in mind, and is optimized for high speed, high quality packet processing, overcoming challenges service providers typically encounter at the network edge.
Added Yu: “Forward looking Chinese service providers, like Jiangsu, are deploying platforms to create agile and open networks that address today’s opportunities, while providing the scalability, capacity, and flexibility to accommodate future service growth without network redesign.”
The new E320 routers join Jiangsu Telecom’s already installed base of Juniper Networks’ E-series routers, as well as Juniper’s T- and M-series routers at China Telecom.
